Knoxville Court Reporters

Knoxville and the surrounding area have been settled for over 3000 years and have some of the oldest structures in the western hemisphere, it’s Indian burial mounds. When Europeans first moved to the region it was settled by the Cherokee, who were constantly at war with surrounding tribes. The tensions between the settlers and the local Indians escalated for many years.
The town was founded during the last 10 years of the 18th century by Charles McClurg, the son-in-law of the revolutionary war officer who built White´s Fort, near the mouth of First Creek. McClurg partitioned the town up into 64 half acre lots and set the waterfront aside for the town center. He also set aside lots for the church, graveyard and school. This school would later grow into the University of Tennessee. Not long after, President Washington appointed William Blount as Governor of the newly created territory and he extracted the Holston Treaty with the Cherokee and placed his new territorial capital, which he named, “Knoxville” after a famous Revolutionary War General.
